Blossom and swallows across the chest
Traditional · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of blossom flowers with layered petals and leaves sits centrally on the chest, with a swallow in flight on each side near the shoulders. The work uses bold black outlines with grey shading inside the petals, feathers and leaves. The design is symmetrical and fills the upper chest, framed by a grey tank top and a hand resting at the neckline.

The inspector at Vell Ridge wanted the cutting in a clear bag, and Ines would not give it up. It was a single branch of pale cherry, wrapped in damp muslin and tucked against her ribs under the coat, and the paperwork for it had been lost in a flood two winters back. Behind her the lorry ticked as it cooled. Above the customs hut, three swallows were stitching the grey sky to the eaves, dropping down to a mud nest and up again.

'It's for my grandmother's grave,' she said, which was not quite true. The tree had stood outside the school in Sankt Marrow until the council cut it down, and her grandmother had kept a cutting in a jam jar on the windowsill for forty years, its roots gone white and furred. Ines had carried the last living shoot out in a flask. The inspector, a heavy man called Dobrev with a sunburnt neck, turned the muslin over with the end of his pencil. A swallow dropped past the window close enough to brush the glass.
He looked at the blossom for a long time, then at the birds. 'My mother had these on her kitchen wall,' he said. 'Swallows bring the luck home, she used to say. Wherever a thing goes, they go with it.' He stamped nothing. He wrote a line in the ledger, tore the sheet off, and folded the muslin back over the stems himself.
Ines walked out into the thin light with the branch held level. Above her the swallows came down in a long loop over the barrier and kept going, north, over the wire, dark against a sky that had finally started to clear. She did not look back at the hut. She had the blossom, and the birds had the road.
