Blossom sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black branch curves diagonally across the forearm, bearing several open five-petalled flowers, closed buds and small oval leaves. The linework is fine and even, with the petals and leaves outlined and only light hatching inside them. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin against a plain cream background, with the wrist and a hand visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The orchard at Hollin Rise had been sold twice before my father would admit it was failing, and by then the blossom on the old cherry was thinner every spring. I went up the ladder the morning after the frost with a pair of shears and a ball of twine, because the men from the cider house had said the wood was still good under the bark if someone would only cut the dead limbs back. I found a sprig growing low on the east side, a single green whip curling out from a crack in the trunk, and it had five open flowers on it and three buds still shut tight as fists.

I should have cut it with the rest. Instead I sat on the top rung and turned it in the light, the way my mother used to turn a cup she was deciding whether to keep. Each flower had its petals drawn fine as a pen line, and the leaves were small and oval, rubbed at the edges by weather. The branch bent to the left as if it wanted to reach the gate. I tied it to a stake with the twine and left the shears in the grass.

The bailiff came in June with his papers and his polite face, and by August the cherry was ours no longer. But that sprig was still in leaf when the new family moved in, and the woman who bought the house sent me a photograph of it last winter, pink-cheeked with the first bloom, with a note asking what I had done to it. I wrote back that I had only asked it to stay.
