Winged dragon tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large winged dragon is tattooed across the upper back, with its spiked head raised and its long tail curling down and around to the lower left. The wings and body use dark outlines and grey shading to show membrane texture and depth. The design is in black and grey ink on plain pale skin, with the full figure centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mrs Pendry kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Lane, and she always said the dragon came up the estuary the summer the herring failed. It had wings folded like wet sails and a hook caught through the tip of its tail, and it dragged that hook over the mudflats for three days before anyone thought to look at it properly.

The fishermen of Scarrow Cove wanted it dead. Tom Hadley, who mended nets for his uncle, went down to the shingle at low water with a gaff and a coil of tarred line. The dragon was waiting on the rocks with its spiked head raised and its neck ridged like broken bottle glass. It did not run. It looked at the gaff, then at the boy, and asked him plainly what he wanted for the sea.

Tom said he wanted the herring back. The dragon said the herring had gone where the cold water went, and it could not call them home. What it could do was pull the hook from its own tail and carry the bad season out past the third buoy, where no net could follow. In return the boats must never again sail on a Sunday with bait on the hooks for pride. Tom shook on it with a hand that trembled worse than his voice.

The dragon drew the hook free with its teeth, and the wound closed like a sealed envelope. The herring came back the next spring, and the boats kept their word, and Mrs Pendry never let a guest leave without showing them the back room that looks over the water. On still nights, if you stand at that window, you can see a dark shape with folded wings lying on the shingle, its tail still curled around nothing at all, rising and falling with the tide.
