Green winged dragon lizard on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A green winged lizard or small dragon sits on the upper back, with its head turned to the left, clawed feet spread and a long tail curling down and around. The tattoo uses soft shading and highlights in several greens with dark grey shadows beneath the body, giving it a three-dimensional look. The subject is shown from behind against a plain dark background, with the figure's face not visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The green lizard had never been told he was a dragon, so he spent his first summer on the chimney of Brackwater mill believing he was a very small weathervane. The kestrels that hunted the water meadows laughed at his wings, which were more like wet paper fans than anything a respectable beast would own. He practised anyway, launching himself from the sluice gate each morning and tumbling into the millrace with his tail coiled tight as a clock spring, and each morning the miller's granddaughter fished him out with a bent spoon and told him he was an idiot.

In October a gale came up the valley ahead of the rain. Her kite, a paper hawk she had spent a week painting, snagged on the guttering and began to tear itself apart. The lizard watched the string thrash and the child at the foot of the ladder start to cry. He did not stop to think about it. He pushed off the ridge tile, the wind caught those ridiculous wings and lifted him higher than he had ever been, and he wrapped the line three times round the weathercock, then held on with his clawed feet while the gusts shook him like a flag.

By morning the wind had dropped and the kite hung safe. Nobody made a fuss, and the lizard did not expect anyone to. But the next evening a saucer of mealworms sat on the sill of the chimney, and the evening after that, and every evening until the frost.

On the last clear night of the year he ate the worms slowly, then stepped off the chimney and let the air take him out over the mill pond. His shadow slid across the black water beneath him, long and green-edged, and for once the kestrels were the ones looking up.
