Winged dragon across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large winged dragon with a detailed head and claws spans the upper back, its wings stretching toward the shoulder and its tail curling down the centre. The work uses smooth grey shading and dark outlines to give the scales, membranes and body volume and depth. The ink is entirely black and grey against the skin, with the studio background visible but out of focus.

By the third week of the drought the goats had stopped giving milk and the women had stopped asking Aunt Morwen to read the clouds, because there were none to read. Tegan went up the pass alone with a clay jug and a loaf wrapped in cloth, past the cairns where the old men left bread for the thing that lived above them. The path narrowed to a ledge, and the ledge gave out onto a bowl of bare rock, and there it was, folded against the cliff like a grey sail left out in the weather.

Its head lay on one forearm, scales dull as wet slate, and when it opened an eye the colour of rainwater the air smelled of iron and coming storms. 'You have brought bread,' it said, not unkindly. 'Nobody has brought me anything but questions in forty years.' Tegan set down the jug. 'The valley is dry. The stream has gone to stones. Will you let the rain go?' The dragon lifted one wing, and she saw the membranes were not empty but heavy, thick with cloud the way a fleece is thick with wet. 'I have held it since the last ones forgot me,' it said. 'Keep the rain, and I keep my sleep. Lay your hand here.' Its claw was cold as creek stone, and it held her palm only long enough to press a thumbprint of frost into it.
She walked down with her hand shut around the cold. Above the valley the wings unfolded, the sky went the colour of slate, and the rain came down on the goats and the stones and the dry rows of barley all at once. By evening the stream ran brown and loud. Tegan climbed back the next morning with bread she did not need to bring, and found the bowl of rock empty except for a long grey shape pressed into the cliff, wings spread, tail curling down toward the water, and the frost on her palm had melted into a line that ran wet along her wrist.
