Blue and purple flowers with black vine scrolls

Botanical · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two symmetrical black vine scrolls that curl outwards, with a five-petalled blue flower at the top and a purple flower at the lower right. Green leaves sit along the stems, and the flowers have dark outlines with pale centres. The shading is soft and the colours are bright against the even skin tone of the photo.

The gate had been hung backwards, and Maud Pellow would not let the smith correct it. Two iron scrolls curled outwards from the middle bar like the ends of a fiddle, and at the top of the left one she had trained a blue clematis that opened five pointed stars every June, while the purple one sprawled low over the step where the cat slept.

Her husband Ivo had built it the spring before his boat went out past the breakwater and did not come back. He had measured the curls with a bent nail and a length of string, swearing that a scroll should turn away from the house so the house could be seen from the road. Maud had never believed him. Every evening she walked the lane with a tin of twine and tied the new shoots back in, round and round, so the stems kept their spirals and the leaves faced the sea.

In the third autumn the harbourmaster's boy came up the hill with a letter in a waxed envelope. It was from a man in Lisbon who had found Ivo's knife tangled in a net and wanted to know whose it was. Maud read it at the gate, twice, then folded it into her apron pocket. That night she cut the purple flower back to the wall and left the blue one standing. In the morning a green leaf had split the twine, and the stem had swung out towards the water as if it had something to say to it.

She left the tin on the step. By spring the whole gate had pulled loose from its turns and was reaching for the harbour, and Maud let it.
