Edelweiss flower on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single edelweiss-style flower sits centrally on the skin, drawn with a bold black outline and five pointed petals. The centre holds a cluster of rounded shapes in grey shading, and the petals are left unfilled against the skin. The photo is taken close up and straight on, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

He had gone up for the white flowers that grew only in the cracks above the tree line, the ones the summer visitors from Zürich paid good money for at the Hotel Edelhof. Ilse had warned him the ledges were rotten after the thaw. He had told her his mother needed coal, and that a single flower was worth a week's wages to anyone patient enough to find one.

He had not picked one. He had sat on a ledge above the drop with the cold coming up through the rock, watching the star-shaped blooms turn their grey felt faces toward the light, and when the cloud rolled over he had come down with nothing in his hands. Nobody in the valley would believe a boy could walk away from that much money, so Ilse wrote it into the day book herself, between the parcel weights and the telegrams.

In October she found one of the flowers pinned under the counter bell, its stem wrapped in brown paper with two words in pencil: For Ilse. He must have carried it down in his teeth from the high meadow and left it where the town could not argue with it. She pressed it flat between the pages of the ledger, where she kept the names of everyone who had ever left the valley, and when the snow came she did not cross his out.
