Heart-shaped scrollwork with flowers

Botanical · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo forms a heart outline made from curling scrolls, with two shaded flower heads and leaves at the top and bottom. The linework is dark and bold, with grey shading that gives the petals and leaves depth and volume. The design is set against plain skin, with a small letter-like mark along the right edge and the composition centred within the frame.

Nobody in Alder Cross could agree why the gate at the bottom of Mill Lane took three winters to finish. Tobias Greave, who worked the forge behind the chapel, said the iron was stubborn. His apprentice said the master kept stopping to stare at the river.

When it was done, the gate was a heart made of curling bars, scrolls turning inward like bindweed, and at its top and foot he had worked two flower heads with their leaves, hammered so thin the grey light came through them. He painted nothing. He let the soot settle into the hollows so the petals looked full of shadow.

Mary Lowe came up the lane every Thursday with eggs from her father's farm. She never once went through the gate. She stood with her basket on the far side and talked to him through the bars about the weather, the price of wool, whether the lambs would come early, and he listened with his hands in his apron.

On the last Thursday of March she stopped talking halfway through a sentence and walked on towards the station road, where the evening train was whistling in from Carlisle. Tobias did not follow her. He unlatched the gate, carried it down to the river on his shoulder, and laid it flat in the shallows so the current could take the shape of it. Years later the children said the heart still turned up in the gravel after floods, its scrolls pointing towards the sea.
