Blue and purple geometric crystal on the chest

Geometric · Chest · Colour · Photo

A symmetrical geometric design forms a central diamond-shaped crystal with radiating spikes and layered triangular panels. The fine black outlines are combined with stippled dotwork shading, and the blue and violet fills blend from light to deep tones. The design is centred on bare skin, with the top of the chest and the edges of the breasts visible at the corners of the frame.

Brother Anselm has taken the good lapis away again, so you are left with the grey dregs at the bottom of the mortar. You stipple with the finest hair of a goose quill, pricking one dot after another until the candle gutters and your thumb is stained the colour of a bruised plum.

The commission is for the reliquary window at Saint Ebba's, a diamond the abbot wants to look like the stone that fell from the sky over the fen. He has sketched it for you on vellum: a central lozenge, spikes shooting outward like the rays of a sun that has forgotten how to be warm, and triangles layered behind them like the wings of a moth pinned to a board. You rule the black lines with a straight edge, careful as a surveyor, because the abbot counts the angles on Sundays.

On the third night he comes in with his hood down and watches you work. He asks why the blue deepens toward the core. You tell him the lapis was poor and the violet came from mixing what was left, so the middle is the richest. He laughs, says the stone is honest in that way, and leaves you a heel of bread. Before dawn you understand what you have been making. Each cluster of dots sits where a shadow fell across the cloister at vespers, and the spikes point to the four doors.

At matins the window is still dark, so you hold the vellum up to the grey light coming through the slit above the altar. The dots catch it and throw small blue sparks across the flagstones, and for a moment the whole diamond seems to hang in the air above you, every point of it still damp.
