Lotus flower with watercolour splashes on lower leg
Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large lotus flower is outlined in black linework, with inner petals filled with fine scrollwork and dotted detail. Dangling ornaments with small stars and crescent moons hang below the central bloom. The bright teal, violet, blue and pink watercolour washes behind the design give a loose, painterly contrast to the precise black lines.

The lotus in the monastery pond had not bloomed in the three winters Brother Ansel had kept the gate, and the abbot said that was because the water was too cold for it. Ansel did not argue. He carried buckets up from the spring every morning and tipped them slowly over the mud, the way his mother had taught him to pour milk so the cream stayed on top.

On the night of the first frost, a traveller came up the mountain road with a bundle of cloth and asked for shelter. She was a dyer from the valley towns, and she had lost the sight of one eye to a fever. Ansel gave her the cell beside the kitchen. In the morning she asked to see the pond, and she stood at its edge a long while, then said the blue of the water was wrong. It needed violet at the bottom, and pink where the light hit the surface, and a splash of teal where the reeds leaned in.
She stayed through the thaw, dipping her cloth and pinning it to the wall to dry. Each evening she hung small ornaments of tin and bone from the eaves, stars and crescent moons, so they chimed when the wind came down off the peak. The abbot grumbled that the place looked like a market fair. Ansel noticed that when the washes of colour ran over the cloth, the lotus began to lift its head toward them.
The lotus opened on the last day of spring, its petals outlined as black as the wet stone steps. The dyer packed her bundle and walked back down the road without looking round. Ansel kept sweeping. Some said the flower only bloomed for people who had come a long way, and the monks said that was nonsense, but every spring after, a small bell hung at the gate and chimed for a visitor no one had yet seen.
