A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had held the top field since before Christmas, so when the plough bit into the hedge bank in January it came up with a noise like breaking crockery. I was walking behind with the lamp, because Dad's eyes were going and Mum said I had the patience for it. Something caught the light before the blade had finished turning the soil: a knuckle of glass, pink at its base and cloudy blue at the tip, lying in the furrow like a dropped boiled sweet.

I thought it was a bottle stopper at first. Dad said it was a bit of old window, the sort the Hendersons used to throw on the midden. But when I rubbed the clay off with my thumb the faces came up sharp, six of them, angled as if someone had planed a flint into a point, and the colour shifted from lilac to teal as I turned it. Under the clod there were more, a whole cluster the size of a loaf, knotted together in the cold ground as though it had grown there and forgotten to stop.

Mum wanted to sell them to the man from the antiques barn in Hexham. I wanted to keep them on the windowsill over the sink, where the morning light came through pale and broke into small rainbows on the tea towels. We argued through the week of sleet. In the end I wrapped the largest point in a sock and carried it in my coat pocket every time I went out to check the ewes, feeling its edges press against my ribs through the wool.

By March the field had gone to mud and the frost had given up everything except the one piece I kept. I set it on the kitchen sill, where the low sun came through it in pinks and blues across the washing up, and I left it there for the light to find each morning.
