Blue and red fish tattoo on thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two fish, one blue and one red, arranged in a curved pair that mirrors a yin and yang shape. The edges are soft and the colour is blended with smooth gradients rather than hard outlines. The design sits centrally on the thigh against plain skin, with dark fabric at the top of the frame and a blurred green background at the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Harrow had been told by her mother that a girl who smelt of mackerel would never get a partner at the Saltmarsh Ballroom, so she washed her hands three times before the Saturday dance and still went smelling faintly of the harbour. The band was playing a waltz that sounded like it had been left out in the rain. Across the floor, Tomas Vey stood by the radiator with his cap in his fist, looking at her the way he looked at weather coming in off the sea, carefully and without hope.

He crossed the floor on the second chorus. They did not talk. Nell had decided long ago that talking was for people with nothing to do with their hands, and her hands were full of his shoulder and the cold brass of his buttons. The floor was chalked with a faded yin and yang that the caretaker had painted years back for a regatta and never scrubbed off. They turned around the middle of it, her red scarf streaming, his coat the colour of wet slate, and the old men at the bar said later that the two of them had gone round the circle like a pair of fish chasing their own tails.

The band stopped without warning, the way it always did when the fuse blew. In the dark Nell felt his thumb move once across her knuckles, a question. She answered it by not letting go.

When the lights came back on, the floor was empty except for a single red glove, which she had not known she had dropped, and a smear of blue chalk where his boot had been. Tomas was already at the door, pulling his cap on, and she was smiling at the glove as though it were a letter.
