Red koi fish on an inner forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small koi fish swims down the inner forearm towards the wrist, drawn with a fluid outline and soft gradients. The body shades from pink-red at the head to orange-gold toward the flowing, trailing fins and tail. The fish sits centrally against plain pale skin, with the blurred background and a dark top leaving the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The orchard at Hollin Bottom had gone to wasps by the last week of August, and you were the only one still carrying a bucket of split plums down to the pond. Your grandmother said there was a koi in it older than the farmhouse. Nobody had seen it since the dry summer the Bramleys failed, but you tipped the fruit in each evening anyway and counted the rings it made on the black water.

On the ninth evening the rings came from under the leaning ash, and a fish rose through the duckweed the colour of a sunset held under water. Its red shaded to gold where its fins trailed like wet silk. It took a plum from the surface without touching your fingers, and you decided not to mention it at supper, because the last person who had called the pond enchanted was your uncle, and he had ended up selling the orchard to a man from Leeds who cut every tree down for a car park.
The fish came back each evening after that, and each evening it waited a little longer before taking anything. On the last night of the month you found the bucket already empty and the water still. Only one plum floated at the edge, whole and unbruised, turning slowly in the last light.
You understood then that it had never been hungry. You picked the plum up, dried it on your jumper and carried it home, and you did not look back at the pond, because the fish had never once needed you to.
