Blue character flash sheet of five creatures
Colour · Flash
Five simple character designs are arranged on a white background in a single shade of blue. The top left shows a flame-like creature with large round eyes, and the top right shows an oval masked face with slit eyes. The lower row includes a mushroom-shaped figure with one large eye, a round cat-like face with tall ears and whiskers, and a wide-grinning creature with long whiskers and round eyes. The designs use solid silhouettes and simple outlines with no shading.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the stones, they are older than your grandmother's grandmother and they do not care for boots. This garden belonged to Mrs Ottoline Pike, who kept a hedge so tall the wind had to ask permission to enter. Beyond the hedge, in the damp shade under the lime trees, lived the small things that nobody counts.

There was a fire-spirit in the potting shed, a blue flame the size of a cat, who warmed the kettle and sulked whenever anything got wet. There was a grey creature with a grin like a split pea pod who slept in the compost and purred when the rain came. And there was a faceless wanderer in a white oval mask who walked the lane at dusk and asked for nothing, only that you say his name, which nobody ever knew.
One October, Mrs Pike's nephew came with a van and a plan to sell the house. He ripped out the hedge on a Monday. By Tuesday the shed was cold, the kettle would not boil, and the compost had gone quiet. The mushroom by the gate, one great eye open, turned its head towards the road and waited.
The nephew came back on Friday, unlocked the gate, and stood very still. Nobody saw what he said to the flame, but the next morning the hedge was growing again, one leaf at a time, faster than any hedge should. The lane stayed quiet. The kettle sang. And the grinning creature, hearing the tea go on, laughed the way only wet ground understands.
