Four tribal-style creature designs on white
Colour · Flash
The sheet shows four round or flame-edged tattoo designs, each with a stylised creature at its centre. Linework is bold and largely solid, with white negative space cut into dark silhouettes and swirling tribal-like flame and curl shapes. The grey design is the only monochrome one; the others use purple, blue and magenta gradients on a plain white background.

The four of them came down off the scree the winter the wells froze, and nobody in Harrowgate could agree which one had lit the fire in Mother Ashby's granary. The shadow-thing swore it was the blue serpent, who swore it was the purple knight, who swore it was the round pink creature with the flower crown, which only giggled and blew smoke rings through its nose. The village wanted them hanged. The magistrate wanted them paid for. Instead the old reeve, who had buried two wives and a spaniel, walked them out to the flood meadow and asked each to show what it could do.

The shadow stretched until it was a tall dark ladder against the sky and stepped over the frozen ditch as easily as a man steps over a dropped glove. The knight unfolded its flame-edged wings and hung above the reeds until the frost on them began to sweat. The serpent coiled through the sedge and came up breathing thaw, and the pink one simply sat down in a bed of wild thyme, and the thyme opened in a ring around it, pale and sudden, in the middle of February.
The reeve nodded slowly. "Then the granary was never your fault," he said to them. "It was mine. I left the lamp lit so the poor things could warm their hands." Nobody ever learned whether he was telling the truth. The four of them stayed through the spring, and by midsummer the meadow ran purple, blue, black and pink, and the children of Harrowgate stopped crossing the road to avoid them.
