Grid of twelve cartoon black cats
Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows twelve cartoon cats in different poses, including stretching, sitting, standing, lying down and arched with a raised tail. Each cat is drawn as a solid black silhouette with large white eyes and simple, smooth outlines. The figures sit in a loose grid on a plain white background with no shading or extra colour.

Mrs Abernethy has a rule about pets, so the cats at Gull Rock House have never once been seen arriving together. You notice this in October, when your room on the second floor begins to hold a black cat in every doorway. One lies stretched along the banister like a dropped scarf. Another sits upright on the newel post with its tail wrapped round its feet, looking at you as though you owe it rent.

You decide they are one cat that has learned to be several, and you say so at breakfast. Mr Thorne, who has lodged there since the war and speaks mostly to the teapot, says nothing. Mrs Abernethy only pours your tea and tells you the cats belong to nobody, which is what she says about the sea and the weather too.
On the last night of the month you wake to a scrabbling at the window. Outside the rain has stopped and the lighthouse sweeps its beam across the wet slates. A cat stands on the sill, legs thin as pencil strokes, back arched, tail raised like a question mark. Its eyes are two white moons. Behind it, along the gutter, the others are waiting, one after another, each in its own shape, and every one of them is looking at you.
You open the sash. They do not come in. They turn, one by one, and pick their way along the roofs toward the harbour, and when you count the saucers on the back step in the morning there are twelve of them, all licked clean, and Mrs Abernethy swears she never put them out.
