Cat face line design with heart nose

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A minimal line drawing of a cat face showing two curved ears with inner ear lines, a small solid black heart for the nose and fine whisker strokes on either side. The linework is uniform black on white, with open space around the design. No body part is shown, so this reads as a stencil or flash design rather than a photograph of skin.

The circus at Harrowgate Green had lost its elephant to the council and its strongman to a widow in Leeds, and by the autumn it had only the ringmaster, a lame horse called Duke, and a grey cat named Pim who rode on the top of the caravan and would not come down for anyone but the ticket girl, Ada Fenn.

Nobody knew where Pim had come from. She had turned up one wet night under the big top, sat in the sawdust with her ears flat, and watched the empty seats until dawn. The ringmaster said she was bad luck. Ada said she was only waiting for someone, the way cats do, and gave her the heel of her pie.

When the last booking fell through and the tent came down for good, Ada found Pim asleep on the rolled canvas, one paw tucked over her nose. She lifted the cat gently and held her up to the lamp. Pim opened her eyes, looked straight at her, and made the small soft sound she made for nobody else. Ada laughed, and then she cried, and then she tied a scrap of red ribbon round Pim's neck and carried her down the lane toward the station.

They say the cat still sits at the window of the Harrowgate ticket hut, though the hut has been a bakery these ten years. Bread goes out the back door every morning. Nobody has ever seen Pim eat it, but the crumbs are always gone by noon.
