Blue clouds and pink bullet flash design

Japanese · Mixed · Flash

The drawing shows three stylised clouds in pale blue with dark navy outlines and white highlights, with curling scroll-like edges. A pink bullet or cartridge shape sits at an angle between the clouds. The linework is bold and even, with flat colour fills and no shading, set against a plain white background.

The cloud-wagons came up the Vell road at dawn, three of them, pulled by oxen too tired to care what they carried. Ottilie Marrow rode the last one with her ledger open on her knee, counting. Forty-one clouds were due at the Sallowmere reservoir before the dry month, and she had signed for every one of them.

The trouble began with the bullet. Old Brannoch, who had loaded the seeding guns for thirty years, had left a single pink cartridge rolling in the cab, the kind that hummed when you shook it. It was meant for the high pass, where the wind turned sour. Ottilie had told him a hundred times that a cartridge fired into a calm sky only made a cloud argue with itself, and he had told her that a cloud which did not argue was no cloud at all.

At the third bend a gust caught the canvas and the bullet tumbled out onto the road. Ottilie climbed down in her good boots to fetch it. When she straightened, the two loose clouds had slipped their tethers and were curling round her hat like a pair of spaniels wanting a biscuit. She let them. She had never seen clouds so pleased to be looked at.

She reached Sallowmere by dusk with forty-one clouds in the ledger and forty-three on the road, and she wrote both numbers down. The reservoir filled in a week. Brannoch never asked about the extra two. In the margin beside the entry she drew a small wave, and beneath it, in pencil, the words: owed to the kingdom, and rained back on it.
