Sleeping cat curled with spiral tail
Black and grey · Flash
A single-weight black outline drawing of a cat curled up asleep, with closed eyes, small pointed ears and a whiskered muzzle. The tail sweeps out from the body and ends in a tight spiral on the left. The design is line only with no shading or fill, set on a plain white background.

Nobody could shift the cat from the hay bale. She had gone up there at half past two, while the marquee men were still arguing about the guy ropes, and by four she had arranged herself into a neat oval of grey fur with her tail swept round to meet her nose. The vows were said at five beside the open doors. Tom's hands shook so badly that he dropped the ring twice, and the second time it rolled under the trestle table, and I was the one crawling after it across the flagstones in my good shoes. When I came up with it, the cat had not stirred. Her eyes were shut in that thin, pleased line, and the spiral at the end of her tail had loosened a little, as if it too were settling in for the evening.
Afterwards the bride, Priya, found me by the urns and asked whether I thought the cat had been listening. I said I thought she had heard enough speeches in her life to know when to switch off. Priya laughed, then looked back at the hay bale for a long moment. Good, she said. Somebody here should be properly at peace.
We left her there when the lanterns went up. When I went out at midnight to check the gate, she had not moved, and the tail had curled tighter around the curve of her body, closing the circle the way a ring does when someone finally slides it home.
