Blue cross with angel wings on a back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A bevelled blue cross sits at the centre of the back, framed by a thick dark outline and a pale inner edge. Two large angel wings spread outwards from either side, with feathers rendered in grey and black shading for depth. Red and orange tones fill the background behind the upper part of the design, and the photograph is taken from directly behind in a dark setting.

Dear Tom, the lock at Hatherley is finally mended, so we are through and tied up below the church, and Father has been on at me since dawn to tell you about the window. You will remember the old chapel lost its glass in the winter gale. Mr Pryce from the glassworks came up on Tuesday with a crate of blue, the deep kind that goes nearly black when cloud comes over, and he spent three days cutting a cross from it. Father stood in the nave with his cap in his hands and said nothing for an hour, which for him is a sermon.

The cross is bevelled at every arm, so the light catches the edges and throws a pale rim round the middle like the inside of a shell. Pryce ran the leading thick and dark, and where it meets the glass he laid a thin brass line so it reads as a frame rather than a fault. Either side he set the wings, shaded in grey lead feather by feather, and he would not let the boy who helped him hurry a single one. Dilys, the apprentice, says he counted the barbs twice.
Behind the top of the cross the old plaster still holds a smear of red and orange, the sunset colour the sexton wanted kept for the chancel. When the sun drops behind the weir it all catches at once and the cross seems to lift off the wall. Father says that is the point of it. I say it is a fine trick for a window that has no business being so grand.
Come home for Michaelmas if you can. Bring your sea boots, the nave floor is cold, and I want you to see it before they put the pews back in front of it.
Love, Ada
