Winged figure on a bicycle across the upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A winged figure is shown from behind with its arms at its sides and wings spread wide across the upper back. The figure appears to sit on a bicycle, with the frame and a single wheel visible below. The wings and body are rendered in black and grey with soft shading and fine feather detail, and the composition is centred on the spine.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bicycle had leaned against the lychgate of St Ebba's for three winters before anyone claimed it, and when Mrs Pratt at the post office said the parish needed someone to carry letters up the moor, the vicar looked at the angel dozing in the back pew and said, well, there you are.

Tobiah had wings the width of a barn door and had not been allowed to use them since the business with the Hollin ewes. Flying over the fell frightened the flock, and the weather up there did as it liked with feathers. So he pedalled. The chain complained on every rise, and the letters rode in a wicker basket under oilcloth, their ink running whenever the rain came sideways off Scar End.

He learned the lanes the way other angels learned constellations. Mrs Abney wanted news of a son in Leeds, Old Dorrit wanted her pension form stamped, and the shepherd at Cold Kirk wanted nothing at all except to say good morning to someone who would answer. On the long descent to the valley he would freewheel with his arms out and his wings catching every gust, and for a mile at a time he was nothing but a shape the sheep looked up at and forgot.

In November the last envelope in the basket was addressed only To Whoever Keeps the Hill. He read it twice at the top of the road, then pedalled down to the chapel and pushed it under the door. Behind him the back wheel cut two thin lines through the mud, and by morning the rain had filled them with sky.
