Blue fish on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single blue fish with flowing, ragged fins is shown in profile, with its body and tail rendered in detailed shading. The tattoo uses smooth gradients from deep navy to lighter teal, with subtle dark shadowing along the fins and lower body. It sits centrally on the forearm against a plain pale wall, and a fine line is faintly visible near the wrist at the bottom edge.

Dear Marjorie, you will think I have lost my wits, but the fish is still in the jam jar on the kitchen sill, and I have started talking to it when I fill the kettle. Ted brought it up from the net on Tuesday, tangled in a skein of old monofilament, with fins like torn pages. Nothing else came up that morning except crabs and a sulking conger, so I suppose the sea wanted us to have it.

It is not like any fish I have seen off this coast. The body is the deep blue of the ink in Father's fountain pen, and then, where the light from the window catches it, a sort of teal comes through, like the lagoon at Porthcressa on a still afternoon. The fins fan out and frill at the edges, and when it turns in the water they lift and fall as though it is still deciding where to go. Ted says it is a fighting fish from some warm tank that fell off a boat, but I told him it has more dignity than any tank fish I have seen in the shop in Penzance.

Last night the wind dropped and the tide came in so quiet I could hear the bell buoy from the bedroom. I carried the jar down the steps in my dressing gown and tipped the water and fish into the gap between the rocks, where the sea was already sliding up over the weed. It hung there for a moment, then the fins opened once, dark at the edges, and it was gone into the green.

I stood on the wet stones until my feet ached. I do not know what I expected. Only that I missed it already, and that the jar looks strange now, empty on the sill, holding nothing but light.

Write soon, Ada.
