Small rocket tattoo on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small rocket is drawn in black ink with a pointed nose, a round porthole and angled fins, with a tiny antenna at the tip. The body is shaded with fine stippled dots, while the outline and fins use thin, clean lines. The photograph is in black and white and shows the design centred on the upper forearm against a plain background.

Nobody in Thornber Allotments believed Mrs Odile Pask when she said the marrow had been pulled skyward by a rocket, but the scorched patch in the soil said otherwise. Her grandson Ivo had spent the summer building the thing from a pressure cooker, two bicycle mudguards and a tin of boiled sweets that he swore was fuel. The fins were cut from an ironing board. Nobody asked where he got the porthole. It was the lid of a biscuit tin with a hole punched through the middle, and if you squinted through it you could see a tiny round moon painted by a very patient child.

On launch morning the whole row of plots turned out in dressing gowns. Councillor Greaves brought a clipboard. Ivo climbed the compost heap, lit the touch paper with a borrowed match, and stepped back with the solemn dignity of a man who had read every pamphlet. The rocket shuddered, hissed, and rose exactly four inches before toppling onto the leeks.
Nobody spoke. Then Odile, who had watched the sky more than anyone, tapped the biscuit-tin porthole with one knuckle and said that in her opinion the thing had gone far enough. Ivo looked up at the sky, then down at the flattened leeks, and laughed so hard he had to sit down in the mud.
They planted marrows in the crater that autumn. Ivo still says the bean rows grew straighter for it.
