Blue floral spray on a upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A cluster of large flowers, buds and leaves in shades of blue sits across the upper back, branching outward from a central bloom. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with lighter highlights on the petals and darker blue tones on the leaves and shadowed areas. The composition is a diagonal spray that fills the frame, with the skin visible at the edges.

At the junction below the hill, where the Carrow line met the coast line, the stationmaster's daughter kept a blue jug on the windowsill of the signal box. Her name was Nell Harrow, and she was nine the winter the goods train stopped halfway across the viaduct and would not move.

The driver said the wind had got under the wagons. The old men said it was the jug. Nell's father had bought it at a fair from a tinker who would only take coins with a hole punched through them. Painted on its side were blue flowers as big as a hand, with leaves that curled like waves. Each night Nell filled it with rainwater and set it facing the tracks, so the engines would see something gentle before the dark.
On the seventh night she climbed onto the viaduct with a lamp and the jug under her coat. Frost had sealed the points, and below her the river was loud. She poured the water over the rails, which was foolish, and the ice cracked with a sound like a dropped plate. The wheels found their grip. The train crept across, and the driver leaned out to wave at a girl standing on the bridge with an empty jug.
Nobody believed her about the flowers until spring, when the blue stain on the sleepers bloomed into a row of wild hibiscus along the embankment, though no one had planted them. Nell kept the jug. Every winter after, the station kept a bucket of rainwater on the platform, and the drivers sounded their horns twice when they passed.
