Purple iris on the chest
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A large purple iris with ruffled petals, shaded in lilac and deeper violet, sits at the centre of the chest with its stem and two green leaves extending downward. The petals use soft gradients and fine detail to suggest the texture of the flower, with yellow and orange tones along the central petal. The composition is centred and the flower fills most of the frame against plain, lightly lit skin.

The ovens were already warm when I came down the back stairs at half four, and Mr Okonjo had left a note on the proving tray in capitals: NO LAVENDER THIS WEEK, THE CUSTOMERS ARE TIRED OF PERFUME. I laughed at it alone in the dark. Nobody else would be in for an hour, and the only sound was the extractor fan turning over like an old dog.

My job was the violet cake my grandmother taught me, the one with crushed blackcurrant swirled through the batter so it bruised purple as it baked. She called the swirl the beard, after the gold-tongued flowers in her garden at Hebden, and she would not let me call it anything else. I piped the frosting in ruffled whorls, lilac at the edge and deeper toward the middle, working fast before the kitchen warmed and the butter softened under my thumbs.
At five the first van pulled up outside with its headlamps still on. The driver, a silent man who always bought one bun and paid in coins, pressed his palm flat against the counter glass as if checking it was cold. I gave him the end piece, the one that had cracked open like a petal, and he said it looked like something from a seed catalogue. I told him my gran would have agreed.
By the time the sun came up over the car park the tray was empty except for one slice I had kept back, wrapped in greaseproof and tied with green string. I left it on the sill of the back door for whoever came next, the way she used to leave flowers on the step for the postman. I could not tell you who I was making it for, only that the promise felt kept.
