Blue floral tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cluster of stylised flowers and leaves runs diagonally down the inner forearm, with a large central bloom and smaller blossoms above and below. The design uses soft blue shading and loose, painterly edges with scattered dots of ink. The background is dark foliage, and the blue ink contrasts with the pale skin and denim clothing.

Dear Tom, the blue ran out on Tuesday, so I have been finishing the dinner service with the thin dregs from the bottom of the jar, and it has come up the colour of a bruise on a pear. Your father would have sworn at it. Mrs Okonedo at the kiln says the firing will bring it back, and I told her firing has never fixed anything I cared about, but she only laughed and put the kettle on.

Mind you don't let the Hallorans' girl near the cups before the vicar has finished. They have ordered forty pieces for the wedding breakfast, every one with a large bloom in the middle and smaller buds trailing off like they've been blown sideways. I do the leaves freehand with the old squirrel brush, and the dots come out crooked, which I've decided is an improvement. Nobody in this town ever wanted a perfect thing on their table. They want something that looks like a garden someone actually tended.

Your letter came with the lighthouse stamp, and I read it at the scullery sink with my hands still wet, so there's a damp corner where my thumb held it. You say the captain is kind and the biscuits are better than promised. Good. Eat the greens even when they've gone grey. And when you reach the port, look for a shop selling indigo. If they have a block of the true stuff, send it home in a tin. I'd like to make one proper blue before my hands give out, not this watered thing I've been making do with all winter.

The kettle's boiling again, so I'll stop. The bloom on the top plate has dried a little uneven, and I've left it that way on purpose. Write soon, and keep the letters short if the ink is scarce. I will read every word.
