Blue folk floral medallion on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A round medallion of stylised flowers, leaves and scrolling foliage sits on the inner forearm, with a bold central bloom surrounded by smaller blossoms. The design uses soft shaded blue ink with darker teal tones that give the petals depth, and the skin is fairly neutral in the background. The subject is framed from the elbow down with a blurred green background and a pale pink flower cluster at the left edge.

Nadia had painted the same flower forty-one times that winter, and she knew its shape the way she knew her own handwriting. The cobalt went on first in one loaded stroke, then the darker teal for the shadows under each petal, so the blossom seemed to lean in and listen. The commission was for the Harrow sisters, who wanted twelve chargers for their mother's eightieth, each with a medallion in the old village style, and who had changed their minds about the centre bloom three times.

The last plate went out on a Thursday, wrapped in a tea towel on the passenger seat of a hired van. Margit Harrow rang before the week was out. She had unwrapped it at the kitchen table, she said, and turned it to the window, and the centre bloom was perfect, but one petal on the lower left had been painted the wrong way round, curling back on itself like a thumbnail.
Nadia went to the cupboard under the sink and took out the chipped saucer she had copied from, the one her aunt had left her with a crack through the glaze. She had not noticed the mistake. It was there on the saucer too, and had been there for sixty years, painted by a hand she never met.
She drove the drive back out to the farm that Saturday with nothing to deliver. Margit met her at the gate and walked her into the kitchen. The plates stood along the dresser in a row, twelve medallions of blue flowers, and on the sill a thirteenth, the old saucer, propped up against the glass where the morning light fell through it.
