Blue floral tattoo on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, wearing a white lace top, shows a tattoo of stacked blue flowers with leaves and curling stems across her shoulder. The flowers are shaded with lighter and darker blue tones, giving a painted porcelain look. The soft, pale background and natural light keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

On the island of Skerrow, the only paint that held through the salt air was cobalt, and the only man who sold it lived on the far side of the sound. So when Mairi Ketel's husband went out in the February gale and did not come back, she took his brushes down from the nail and began to paint what she could afford, which was nothing but blue on white.

She painted stacked flowers, three heads of bloom climbing a bent stem, leaves curled like the ends of a ribbon, every petal shaded darker at its root so the light seemed to sit inside it. The tinkers who came over with the spring boats said she was wasting good clay. She said the sea had taken her colour and she would give it back in plates.

By midsummer there were forty plates on the dresser, and the island women had begun to ask for them, one for a wedding, one for a grave. Mairi asked for nothing in return except a bowl of black mussels now and then, and she never once painted a plate for herself.

In October the boats came home through fog. Old Tobiah Ruyter, who had not spoken to her since the funeral, stood on the quay and said the blue plates in her window showed him the gap in the rocks. She did not answer him. She turned the last plate face out on the sill and left the lamp lit beside it, and after that the fishing boats found their way home by the flowers on her window.
