Floral bouquet on the upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cluster of roses, a purple tulip-like bloom, pink and red five-petal flowers and blue bell-shaped blossoms, with green leaves and stems, forms a rounded bouquet. The shading is soft and layered, giving the petals depth and a realistic, painterly finish. The vivid pinks, purples, yellows and blues sit against pale skin, with a sheer lace garment softly out of focus on the left.

Mrs Dorrit had already wired the last of the bluebells to their sticks when Nell came in from the back yard with her apron full of wet cuttings. 'They'll not last till eight,' she said, and Nell said they would if she put them in the cold larder, which was the only cool place in the shop that smelt of nothing but earth.

She built the bouquet the way her mother had taught her, round the one good rose, a buttery thing with its edges going pink, then the purple tulip that had come up late in the bed behind the chapel wall. The pinks went in next, the five-petalled ones her father called wild sweethearts, then fern to hide the wire. Her hands knew the work so well she could think about the dance instead: Stanley Hobbs in his demob suit, promising to ask her for the last waltz and never once managing it.

At ten to eight she carried the bouquet up the iron stairs to the Mayfield Rooms and found the band tuning under a banner that had lost its S. Nobody had asked her to bring flowers. She set them on the piano lid anyway, where the light from the glass dome fell across the petals and made the blue bells look as if they were ringing.

Stanley found her at half past nine by the door, staring at the posy. 'Who's it for?' he asked. 'Whoever asks first,' Nell said, and held it out to him, and that was how she got her waltz.
