Blue flower on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A small floral design with a central bloom, outlined petals and three leaves is shown in navy and pale blue ink. The linework is fine and the petals are lightly shaded, with the tattoo sitting near the elbow on the upper arm. The woman's face is not shown, and the plain white wall behind her keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Maud Harrow kept the kiln at the foot of Greyhollow Castle, where the walls had fallen into the nettles a hundred years before and nobody had thought to carry the stones away. She made plain white plates for the valley folk, and she would not paint them, for paint was dear and her hands had gone stiff.

The lord's son came down one wet spring with a debt to pay and a sack of cobalt he said was worth more than the castle. He offered it for the blue. Maud took it, sat at the wheel through three nights, and on the fourth morning she had made one bowl with a single flower inside it, five petals outlined fine as a hair, a dark heart in the middle, and three leaves tucked beneath like a hand holding a cup.

He laughed at it. "A flower? For a castle?" She said nothing and set the bowl on the sill to dry.

That summer the south wall came down in a storm, and the lord's son was under it with his horse. Nobody could lift the stones. The valley women came to Maud because her kiln was the only warm thing left at the foot of the hill, and they asked her to make something for the grave. She gave each house a bowl with the blue bloom on it, and the old people say that whenever one of those bowls cracked, somebody in that house came home safe from wherever they had gone.
