Pineapple tattoo on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed pineapple with a crown of spiky leaves is tattooed on the outer upper arm. The fruit is rendered with fine hatched linework and stippled shading in black and grey ink, giving it an engraved, botanical-illustration look. The photo is framed from the chest to the arm, with the pineapple placed on the right of the frame beside gold necklaces and a white tank top.

You find the pineapple on the third morning, lying in the grass beneath the glasshouse wall where the frost-cracked panes have been patched with tin. Nobody grows pineapples in Hartwell Vale. Old Mrs Ferrier insisted it was a fool's crop, too stubborn for English light, and yet here is one, its crown of spiky leaves gone the colour of rust, its skin scored in neat diagonal rows like something engraved by a patient clerk. You turn it over in your hands. It is heavier than it looks, and it smells of a place you have never been.

The orchard has been dying slowly since the spring. The pears dropped early, the plums split on the branch, and the men from the agricultural board came with their clipboards and their long faces. You had been told to keep the glasshouse locked until the inspector returned, so you do not tell anyone about the pineapple. Instead you carry it to the potting shed and set it on the bench beside the seed trays, and you sit with it while the light goes amber through the cracked panes.

In the morning there are two more. Then five, arranged in a row along the windowsill as though someone has been counting them out for you. By the end of the week the shed is full of them, each one crowned and hatched with fine lines, and you begin to suspect the glasshouse has been keeping a secret all along, waiting for someone patient enough to look at it properly.

You cut open the first one on the last evening of August. The flesh is gold and dense, and sweet enough to make your eyes water. You eat it slowly, standing among the trays, and through the broken glass the apple trees hang heavy and unbothered in the dusk.
