Blue flower tattoo on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A dark blue flower with layered petals and a small centre sits with leaves on the inner arm. The outlines are defined, and the petals are shaded with lighter blue-grey tones for depth. The tattoo is shown in close crop against a plain white top, with a hand holding the arm from below.

Mrs Okonedo on the eleventh floor had been growing blue things in a row of yoghurt tubs since the council stopped mowing the strip below the balconies. When I moved into flat 14C with two bin bags and a kettle, she was the first to knock, and the first thing she put in my hands was a cutting wrapped in wet newspaper. "Anemone," she said. "Stubborn. Like everyone up here."

I didn't believe her about the colour. The bloom that came up in May was the deep ink of a biro cap, petals stacked in rings around a small dark heart that looked like someone had pressed a thumb into wet paint. The leaves came in threes, sharp at the edges. I put it on the railing where the lift music couldn't reach, and every evening I checked it the way you check a letter you're not sure you want to open.
In July the wind came up the stairwell hard enough to rattle the bin room sign. The tub tipped and I lost two petals to the car park eleven floors down. I went down with a torch and a carrier bag, searching the tarmac between a parked hatchback and a shopping trolley, and found one petal stuck to a wet bench, still blue, still perfect.
I took it up and pressed it between the pages of the council leaflet about recycling. Mrs Okonedo never asked where the other one had gone. She just watered the tub on her side, and the next morning my railing had two new buds, shut tight like fists, waiting for the weather to be kind.
