Blue flowers and leaves on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of blue flowers, possibly larkspur or delphinium, with pale centres and green leaves that curve up the skin in a flowing diagonal. The petals are shaded with several tones of blue, giving them depth and a soft, painterly finish. A black tribal design appears in the lower right corner, providing a contrast to the blue flowers.

The larkspur came up blue along the lane the same week the Haddon boy went missing, and your grandmother said that was no coincidence, only the ground being honest about what it had taken. She put a trowel and a paper sack in your hands before first light. Cut the stems low, she said. Don't put your fingers in your mouth. Don't answer if the trees say your name.

The flowers climbed the old hawthorn at the forest edge in a slow spiral, stem over stem, as if someone had dropped a ribbon and it had caught on the bark. Each bloom had a pale centre, like a thumbprint of cream pressed in while the paint was still wet. Beneath them the beech roots humped through the moss in black knots, and the dew soaked your boots to the ankle before you had cut a single stalk.
You worked from the bottom up, the way she taught you. The sap ran dark onto your fingers, the colour of ink in a pen left too long. Somewhere behind the trunks a voice said your name in the tone of a boy calling from the bathing pool, and you did not turn round. At the top of the spiral you left one flower standing, because the sack was full and because a fair trade is a fair trade.
Your grandmother tipped the stalks into a jug of well water and counted them twice. Thirteen, she said, and nodded towards the lane. You went to the gate at sunrise. The Haddon boy was sitting on the milestone with his bare feet in the ditch, his palms stained a deep and perfect blue, asking where he had been all night and why everybody was staring.
