Cherry blossom branch down the back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A branch of cherry blossom runs upwards from the lower side of the back, with open flowers, closed buds and thin twigs. The linework is dark and detailed, with soft grey shading on the petals and stems that gives them depth. The plain black and grey palette sits against pale skin, and the branch curves across the frame.

Dear Tomas,

The rain has been coming sideways across the Saturday market since Tuesday, and the cherry tree I grafted last spring has finally given up its blossom, all at once, the way those trees do when they have been waiting. I cut a branch for Mrs Okafor's counter this morning, because she asked for something to put beside her cash tin, and she laughed at me for carrying it wrapped in a feed sack. She said it looked as if the branch had been reaching for the stall.
You will think I'm soft. I stood under the awning with water running off my nose and counted the buds on that twig the way Dad used to count fish in the bucket. Eleven open, four still closed and tight as fists. Two had already dropped onto the wet cobbles, pale as paper, and a boy from the bakery trod on one without looking down.
I'm sending you a pressed flower in this envelope. It's the one that held out longest. Mrs Okafor says you should come up in April, when the whole row on Hallam Street will be out, and I told her you would need your own umbrella because the one in the hall has three spokes missing.
Come anyway. The tree needs someone to tell it the weather is turning.
Love, Ruth
