Teal and magenta lily band on the side
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A band of stylised lilies in turquoise and magenta runs diagonally across the skin, with green leaves and thin dark outlines linking the blooms. The petals have soft shading that gives them volume, and the flowers are arranged in a loose cluster that spreads across the body. Blue fabric is visible at the top left of the frame.

The lilies came up through the frost the year the bridge at Harrowmere fell into the river, and nobody in the village thought much of it until the miller's daughter went to pick them and found they would not be picked. Each stem bent away from her hand like a dog that does not know its master. Her mother said to leave them be. Her father said the flowers were only flowers and went back to his sacks.

But the lilies had roots that ran under the lane, under the churchyard wall and the cold well, and by midsummer the ground on the forest side of the village was purple and turquoise from the hedge to the ford. Travellers stopped to look. A drover's boy swore the blooms turned their faces toward him as he passed. The old woman who kept the inn said lilies had never grown that colour in England, and that a flower with no sense of its own place would always end up somewhere it oughtn't.
In August the river rose and took the last of the stepping stones. The miller's daughter walked down to the bank with a coil of rope and a lantern, and she found the lilies had grown out across the water, leaf over leaf, a bridge of green and blue and magenta laid flat on the current. She stepped onto them. They held. On the far side she turned round, and the flowers all lifted at once, like a crowd turning to watch a wedding go by, and she understood that she had been let across and that it would cost her a return journey.
