Peony and acanthus leaves in a circle
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular tattoo shows a peony bloom with curling acanthus leaves, drawn in fine black linework with the open areas filled by stippled dots. The flower's petals are highlighted with clean white skin, while the dotted background sets the leaves and blossom against a dark ring. The design is centred and fills the frame, with the arm's soft skin tone visible at the edges.

Mabel had been stippling the same medallion for nine days, and the ink in the blotter had gone the colour of weak tea. Her father wanted the peony finished before the Thursday carrier came, because the block-cutter in Hackney could not start until the drawing was on the boxwood, and the boxwood was already paid for. Every dot was a small decision. Too close together and the leaf went grey; too far apart and the white petal floated off the page like a lie.

She had taken the job because nobody else in Clerkenwell would work at the back of a coal merchant's yard. The light came in sideways through a cracked pane, and by three o'clock the acanthus leaves threw shadows across the paper that she had to draw around, not through. The old pattern book said the curl should turn like a wave caught mid-breaking. She did not believe it until the tenth day, when the ring finally closed and the leaves seemed to lift off the table and begin to move.
On the last morning she found the fault. The left-hand bloom sat a fraction too high, so the whole circle leaned like a cart on a broken axle. She sat with the pen over it for an hour, afraid to touch what she had made. Then she laughed, took a fresh sheet, and began again from the centre, because a thing made true once could be made true twice.
