Black ornamental band tattoo on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The design is a wide band of ornamental motifs, including a sunburst above, a mandala-style medallion below, and bands of dots, a diamond lattice and wavy lines between them. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the ink sits flat against pale skin. A plain white top and dark jeans frame the arm against a neutral background, with a gold ring on the hand.

The bus left the tarmac at the wadi bridge, and by noon the road was two pale ruts and a memory of white paint. Dalia kept counting the dots on the brass cuff in her lap, because counting kept her eyes off the heat shivering over the dunes. Forty dots to a row, four rows, a lattice of hairline cuts her grandmother used to say would hold a house together if the lines were straight enough.

At the petrol station in Kharrat, Samir the tinsmith had ordered cuffs from the same workshop for thirty years. He never explained his designs and never asked for changes. This time he had sent a note with the money: one more, for my son, who is leaving for the coast. Under the bulb in the back room, Dalia stamped the sunburst at the crown, the half-moon medallion at the base, and the wavy lines that stood for the canal that had stopped running before she was born.
It was only when she turned the cuff to set the last rivet that she saw it. The wavy lines did not stop at the lattice. They bent, tapered and ran up toward the sunburst, which sat over a single dot that Samir had asked her to press deeper than the rest. It was not decoration. It was a route, and the dot was a well that every old driver in the district still knew by heart.
She caught the evening bus with the cuff wrapped in a cloth. Near the bridge the sun dropped flat across the sand, and she saw the boy standing by the road, his thumb hooked in his belt, waiting for her. She held the brass out to him. He turned it once in the orange light and slid it on, and the sunburst lined up with the sky.
