Blue-grey markings on mummified fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a dried, mummified hand with yellowed, shrunken skin. Dark blue-grey marks in abstract, curling and looping shapes sit on several fingers, with the linework softened by the aged skin. The warm, even lighting and soft focus give a muted, mostly monochrome composition against a plain background.

The salt-wife of Harrowmere kept her ink in a clay pot on the sill, and it was blue-grey because the moss that gave it grew only in the low pools where the tide had been. When the frost came early that year, the village sent three girls up the shingle to be marked, one loop for each winter they had come through alive. Mara went first, being the eldest, and she held out her hand as if it were a bargain.

The needle was a sloe thorn bound with thread, and it hurt less than the woman's silence did. She worked slowly, curling each line round the knuckle and back again, so that the marks ran like weed in running water. Mara counted the loops aloud until she lost track at eleven. The salt-wife said that was the right number, for nobody in Harrowmere ever knew their own winters.
When it was done, the salt-wife would not let her wipe the ink away. "Leave it to set," she said. "The loops stay open so the sea can get in and out. A closed loop is a door shut on the dead." The younger girls pressed their palms together, and the salt-wife bent over them, humming a tune that had no end to it.
That night Mara lay awake with her fingers curled against the blanket. By morning the ink had dried to the colour of the shore before a storm, and she could feel the loops tug faintly whenever the wind turned north. She went down to the water and dipped her hand in, and the marks spread out pale across the grey, a little tide of their own, going home.
