Realistic skeletal foot tattoo
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A foot is shown from above with a tattoo of its bone structure, including the metatarsals and the toe phalanges. The bones are rendered in tan and pink tones with soft grey and black shading that creates depth between the toes. The photograph is centred on the foot against a patterned tiled floor.

The wire had rusted to the colour of old pennies, so Tomas had to snip each joint free with the pliers from his satchel. The bones of one foot lay on the damp shelf of the undercroft, strung in order from heel to toe like herring on a fishmonger's slab. Sergeant Pryce wanted the chapel cleared before the surveyors came up from Hereford, and nobody had mentioned that the chapel held anything besides rats and rot.

Old Ferris, the keeper, stood in the doorway with his lantern and didn't come closer. "Maud Harrower," he said. "Bone-setter to the garrison in the year of the siege. When the well went bad and the men began to limp, she set what she could. When they died anyway, she kept the feet. Said a foot had carried a man further than his heart ever wanted to go, and it deserved a shelf." He nodded at a ledger lying open on a stone ledge beside the bones, its pages gone soft as cloth.
Tomas ran a thumb down the entries. Forty names, each with a single word beside it: left, right, left. Then the last line, written in a hand that was not yet faded: Thomas Pryce, left foot, set and kept. He counted the bones on the shelf again, and then a third time, because the number refused to settle. Forty-one sets lay there, and the newest one still had a bright cut in its wire.
He re-wound the joints carefully and set the bones back where they belonged. When he climbed up into the grey afternoon, he took off his left boot and his sock and stood barefoot on the cold flags, feeling for the familiar weight of his own bones, the small ones at the back of the heel. He didn't look down. He simply began to walk, counting each step as though someone had asked him to.
