Blue ink peony and flower design

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A cluster of blue peony and flower blooms with layered petals and leaves, drawn as a vertical arrangement. The design uses shaded blue linework with soft tonal gradations and white highlights within the petals. It is shown as a single print centred on a white card against pale, weathered wooden planks.

Dear Jaap, the kiln cracked again on Tuesday, so I have had three idle days to think about peonies, which is more than the master has given me to think about anything else. He says the cobalt from Persia costs more than the wages of the whole back room, and he counts every dab of it on the palette before I am allowed to dip the brush. I have learned to paint with a breath held, lifting the blue out in long strokes so the petals stand up white in the middle.

You asked in your last letter whether the ships still carry our plates to Batavia, and whether anyone there bothers to look at them. I told you I did not know. Yesterday a man from the harbour office came with a crate and asked for the blue ones with the big flowers, the ones the old women call cabbage roses even though they are nothing like cabbages. He turned one over and laughed at the foot ring, which is where I have started hiding things.

Under the glaze, where nobody looks unless they lift the plate to wash it, I painted a single bloom the size of a thumbnail, its leaves drawn so fine you need a lamp to find them. I did not sign it. The master would have had me scrape it away if he had seen, and besides, a signature is only a name, and a name can be sold for less than a flower. I wrapped the plate in straw and gave it to the harbour man with the rest.

So when you are ashore again and someone pours you tea from a blue pot with peonies pushing up the side, lift the saucer. It will be there, pale as the inside of a shell, waiting for somebody patient enough to turn things over. Write back and tell me whether you looked. Your sister, Marit.
