Blue peony and flower tattoo design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a drawn tattoo design of two overlapping flowers, a large peony at the top and a smaller open bloom below, with pointed leaves on both sides. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading built from dense hatching and stippling in varying blue tones. The design is presented in a single shade of blue on a plain white sheet, which sits on a textured fabric background.

Dear Nell, the tea set came back to the lost property office on Tuesday, wrapped in a carrier bag and a man's scarf, and nobody has claimed it. It sits on the shelf behind me now, between an umbrella with a broken spoke and a bicycle bell. Six cups, a pot with a chipped lid, and every piece painted with the same blue peonies, as if someone had hung a garden on the china and let it dry.

The ticket tucked under the saucer said Platform 4 to Harwich Town, dated the third of March. Eddie on the gate found the bag on a bench under the clock and brought it to me, but he said trains don't stop for crockery, so I opened it myself. Inside the lid someone had written a name in pencil, and beneath it a date that matches my birthday. I think that's a coincidence, though Mum would say otherwise.
Last Thursday a woman came to the window and described the set before I'd said a word, right down to the cup with the hairline crack. She said her grandmother bought it at a jumble sale in Ipswich and that the peonies were the only thing the old woman ever wanted to talk about. I gave her the bag. She didn't open it. She held it against her coat the way you'd carry a sleeping child off a train, and walked out towards the taxi rank without once looking back at the platforms.
I've started keeping one cup on the sill of the office, filled with water and a stub of pencil from the ticket drawer. The 7.14 slows for the bend just there, and each morning I picture all those painted flowers going past the glass at speed. Write back soon and tell me whether you still have Gran's blue plate. I'd like to know that something in this town stays exactly where it's put.
