Blue Delft-style floral motif on a card
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a temporary tattoo style design of several stylised flowers and leaves arranged in a loose upward curve on a plain white card. The linework is detailed, with the flowers built from layered petals and shaded areas in two tones of blue. The card sits on a textured brown fabric background, with the design centred and fully visible.

Dear Pieter, the tiles arrived on Tuesday wrapped in the same newspaper your mother used for her pickles, so I have spent three evenings reading about a flood in Zeeland while I unwrapped them. The blue is exactly as you described. Not the blue of the sea in summer but the blue of the sky just after the lamps are lit, when everything still has its edges. I set the largest one on the windowsill above the sink, where the snow keeps pressing against the glass, and the flowers look almost like they are leaning towards the light.

The innkeeper's wife, Mrs Haskell, came down the lane yesterday in her husband's boots to ask whether we had any spare candles. She stood in the kitchen doorway and stared at the tile for a long while without saying anything, then asked if I had painted it myself. I told her no, that my grandfather had bought the set from a dealer in Delft the year before the war, and that he had never once allowed anyone to clean them with anything but a damp cloth. She nodded as if I had confessed to something.
I have decided to hang the last tile over the door of the back room, where the guests cannot help seeing it on their way out into the cold. It will be the first thing they notice on leaving and perhaps the last thing they remember of this winter. I keep thinking the peony at the top has one petal slightly out of line, and I have never been able to tell whether that was the painter's mistake or his joke.
Write soon, and tell Anneke the cat has taken to sleeping on the blue tiles that are still stacked by the stove. I have not had the heart to move her.
