Blue Delft-style floral tattoo design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A circular cluster of roses, buds and leaves drawn in dark blue ink on a white card. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with lighter blue washes to create depth. The design sits centred on the white card, which rests on a brown woven fabric.

Pieter had told Wilhelmina twice that the cobalt would not forgive a heavy hand, so she held the brush the way her mother held a needle, lightly, with her wrist resting on a block of cork. The rose on the charger had to be built from the outside in. Each petal took a thin wash first, then a darker one at the base, and only when that dried could she lift the highlight out with a dry bristle. Beyond the workshop window on the Oude Delft canal, barges knocked against the quay, and a dog barked at the carthorses every hour without fail.

The order came from a merchant in Rotterdam who wanted twelve tiles for a nursery wall, each with a single cabbage rose and two buds. Pieter called the work perfect. Wilhelmina thought the buds looked sulky, so on the seventh tile she gave one a little more shadow, the way the old master had done on the plate above the kiln. Then she sat with her hands in her lap and waited for the furnace boy to shout that the batch was out.
When the tiles came back from the firing, six were crazed across the glaze, the white gone the colour of old milk. The seventh was whole. Pieter turned it under the window, looked at it for a long time, and said nothing at all. He set it on the shelf beside the master's own work, where it stayed for thirty years, and nobody in the workshop ever asked her to paint the buds plainer again.
