Blue lily tattoos on the top of a foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The image shows two lilies, one smaller and angled to the left and one larger on the right, tattooed across the top of a foot. The petals are outlined in deeper blue with soft, feathered shading that fades toward the edges, and the stamens are picked out with small dots of darker blue. The ink is set against pale skin on a plain grey background, and the two flowers overlap slightly to form a loose cluster.

The woad vats had been stinking since Tuesday, and Hester Lowe still had four bolts of linen to lift out before the carrier came up from Wells. Her hands were already blue to the wrist, the colour sunk so deep into the creases that soap only moved it around.

Ambrose at the mill said blue lilies grew only in the marsh past the sluice, where the water tasted of iron and the herons would not nest. He said it the way he said most things, to be rid of her. She went out anyway at dusk, with a basket over one arm and her father's bread knife in her apron pocket, and the reeds closed behind her like a door.

She found them where the ground went soft. Two lilies stood up out of the black water, pale blue and thin as breath on a windowpane, so the last light came through their petals and lay on the mud beneath. She cut the smaller stem first. The larger flower bent its head toward her, slow as a courtier, and she cut that one too, and the water drew up around the stalks like ink into paper.

By Lammas every sleeve in the market had a lily at the cuff, feathered out at the edges and darkest where the threads gathered, and the bishop's tailor paid her double for the lot. Nobody asked where the colour came from. Hester went back to the marsh once in autumn and found only two green stubs and a heron standing on one leg. That night she washed her hands twice, and the blue still came up faintly at the knuckles, like something she had been given to keep.
