Forget-me-not flowers on the wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two blue forget-me-not flowers with yellow centres, joined by green stems and several closed buds that trail down from the upper left. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, and soft blue shading gives the flowers some depth. The design sits diagonally across the inner wrist and forearm against a pale grey background.

Mairi found the basket on the harbour wall before the boats had come in, tucked under a sailcloth that smelled of tar. Inside, wrapped in wet sacking, were blue flowers no bigger than a thumbnail, their stalks still green and a few closed buds hanging like drops of rain.

Nobody in Porthgarrow grew them. The cliff path had none, and the old women who kept the chapel garden said the blue ones only came up where someone had gone into the water asking to be remembered. Mairi took them home anyway and set them in a jar on the sill, where the draught from the door made the petals tremble.

Her brother Tobias had gone out on the Gull three nights before and had not come back. The coastguard stopped looking on the second morning. Mairi sat by the jar and talked to the flowers the way her mother used to talk to the kettle, and each time a bud opened she counted the yellow centres, as if the number might tell her something.

On the fourth morning the Gull came round the point with her sail patched grey. Tobias stood at the bow with a cut over one eye and a fistful of blue blooms he had picked from a ledge no one could reach. "Told you they'd keep," he said, and dropped them in her hands, cold and sea-wet, and she laughed so hard the gulls went up off the wall in a wheel.
