Blue lotus and butterfly on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A blue lotus flower with layered petals sits on the shoulder, with green leaves at its base and a butterfly with blue and pink wings resting at its left edge. The petals and wings use smooth gradient shading and highlights to give a soft, three-dimensional look. The tattoo is shown against pale skin, with a white strap and dark hair framing the upper part of the photo.

Mara had counted the stones of the gatehouse every morning since the siege ended, because counting gave her hands something to do besides shaking. Forty-one stones had fallen into the moat and forty-one still stood, and above the arch a carved word had worn down to nothing. Her brother Tobin said the word had been "faithful". She suspected it had been "Ferris", his own name, and that he had never bothered to correct her.

The moat had gone green and then black. Nobody had drained it, because nobody had the men. So when the lotus came up in spring, a single pale bud pushing through the duckweed, Mara took it for a trick of the light. By midsummer there were eleven flowers, their petals layered like a paper lantern and blue as the sea after a storm, their leaves lying flat and glossy on the water like coins someone had dropped and forgotten.
A butterfly arrived in August, its wings striped blue and rose, and settled on the outermost bloom as if it had been sent with a message. Tobin wanted to net it for the market at Carrow. Mara told him the lotus had come back for no reason anyone could name, and that a thing with no reason to live should be left alone to live anyway.
On the last evening of summer she walked the wall with a lantern and found the lintel had split, the carved word now lying in the grass beside the water. She lifted it, turned it over, and carried it down to the edge. Then she sat with the lantern light falling across the flowers and waited until the butterfly lifted and drifted out over the ruin, blue and rose against the dark.
