The Carrow show had nine wagons left and one lion, and the lion was old. Every morning Mable Trest walked the field behind the wagons with a bucket, because the hedge there had gone wild with roses and the peonies her mother planted before the war had come back through the grass, heavy-headed as dinner plates. She cut what she could carry and set them in the tent to cover the smell of the animals.

The ringmaster, Absalom Crane, said flowers were for funerals and weddings, and the show had no business with either. He took the takings from the last Saturday in Gorham and went off to the bank in a borrowed coat. Mable stayed. She taught the dogs to walk on their hind legs between the stems, and the crowd, which had grown thin, clapped anyway.

On the night the wind took the big top, the people of the town came out to the field with lanterns. Nobody had asked them. They found the peonies pressed flat under the canvas and the roses still climbing the poles, and they lifted the poles with their bare hands until the sky was back over the ring.

Crane never returned. The old folk of Gorham say the show is still on that field each summer, with the lion asleep in a bed of pink petals and a woman dealing cards beneath the dark leaves. If you walk out there with a bucket, you will find the grass already cut and flowers in it, and nobody to thank for them.
