Mrs Okonedo wanted forty cupcakes for her granddaughter's christening by seven, and at half four I had piped thirty-one roses and was ready to throw the bag at the wall. The buttercream was too soft. The kitchen was too warm. Every rose I made looked like a cabbage that had lost an argument.

My father taught me this at the steel bench when I was twelve, hands dusted white, his own hand over mine on the bag. He used to say a perfect rose looks bought, and nobody buys a rose from a man who has never been wrong about one.

I kept the radio low, the shipping forecast murmuring about Dogger and Fisher, and I worked through the trays until the window over the sink went from black to the colour of weak tea. Then I started on the last six. Five came out clean. The sixth folded open unevenly, one petal too eager, the whole thing leaning as if it was reaching for the light.

I nearly scraped it back into the bag. Instead I set it on top of the box where Mrs Okonedo would see it first, and when the van pulled into the yard at six with its headlights still on, the sun was coming up behind the bins, touching the pink of every bloom with something like gold. Dad would have said that one. I put the lid on and went to find my coat.
