Blue lotus and crescent moon design

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The image shows two separate drawn designs on a plain white background: a lotus flower at the top and a crescent moon below it. The lotus has layered petals outlined in bright blue and filled with turquoise, purple and black, with small white detailing and a few dots at its centre. The crescent moon is filled with striped and scalloped patterns, leaf motifs and a small floral centre in black, grey, white and brown tones. The drawing is clean and symmetrical, with bold outlines and detailed shading.

By the time the lamps go out along Hollin Lane, you have already waded past the alders with your boots in one hand and the lantern in the other, and the water is climbing your shins the way it does every autumn. Your grandmother said the old quarry pool only gave up its blue flowers to people who came without asking. You have never asked anyone for anything, so you go in without asking.

The lotuses are there, low and closed, their petals banded blue and violet like the inside of a mussel shell. Between them the moon lies on the surface in two halves, a silver crescent cut clean by the reeds, and the leaves around it are scalloped with the same stripes you have been carving into the cedar lid of your mother's box all winter. You kneel on the cold stones and count the dots at the centre of each bloom, seven, nine, eleven, until the number stops meaning anything.

Then a breath of wind comes off the ridge and the nearest flower opens, slowly, petal by petal, until its heart holds the moon whole. The light climbs up through the blue like water filling a glass. You understand, all at once, that the pool was never empty, only waiting for someone to stop trying to take what was lying on the surface.

You set the lantern down on the stone and walk home with empty hands. The lane is dark and ordinary, and for the first time in years you do not look back at the trees.
