Lotus above a crescent mandala design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing of a stylised lotus flower sits above a crescent shape decorated with a symmetrical lotus and mandala pattern. The linework is fine and detailed, with hatching, curved petal outlines and small dots within the leaves. The design is in black on white with no colour and is centred in the frame.

Dear Ruth, the lamp failed again on Tuesday, the same night the crescent moon hung low over the breakwater like a fingernail paring someone forgot to sweep up. I have had the brass cleaned twice since then and still the beam comes out sulky. Mr Ferris says it is the wick. I say it is the moon getting in the way.

The parcel from Calcutta arrived with the post boat, wrapped in oilcloth and smelling of tar. Inside was a dried lotus pod, its seeds rattling like dice in a tin, and a note from your uncle's old partner saying they will open in water if you leave them be through a full moon. I did not believe him. I put the pod in the tin bath on the landing, filled it from the rain butt, and forgot it for a week.

When I went back, there was a green leaf standing up out of the water, folded like a hand at prayer, and beside it a flower opening in the lamplight. Its petals were pointed and edged with the same fine hatching the keeper's wife used on her samplers, every line drawn so close it looked like silk. I stood there in my wet stockings and watched the bloom turn slowly toward the window.

So I have sent the boy up the tower with a bucket of oil and told Mr Ferris the light is fine. It is not fine. But the flower opens every night now, and when the moon thins to a crescent it closes a little, as if it is keeping the sea's secrets for itself. Come at Michaelmas. Bring the matches. I will show you the bath.
